398,283,480 Lost Sectors

One of my hard drives suffered a SMEF (Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure) this evening while I was trying to partition a completely different hard drive for an OSX install.

It’s funny, the drive I was technically doing illegitimate things to trucked along nicely. This other drive (my Pro Tools drive, might I add) physically vanished as a logical drive and reads in Partition Magic as “BAD”. My options are to Format or Format.

I spent a good thirty minutes online looking for Data recovery programs. The ones that are free can’t see the drive. The “free trial” of the expensive shit taunts me with the file structure of my Pro Tools session files. Not to bash on open source software, but it seems they can only recover deleted files on an existing hard disk and not pull one out of a black hole with naught but a scratch.

The “free trial” had to scan all 398,283,480 sectors of the disk before it could give me a permanent readout. The next step was, of course, to copy the 180 gigs from that readout to a separate drive so I can format the “BAD” drive and start over.
It’s been a really long fucking night.
